He strode forward, long, seductive strides drawing my gaze. His shirt was open, fluttering in the wind, exposing a bare chest. He was sex on legs, from his sultry, perfect smile to his dark glinting eyes.

“Holy fuck on a broomstick,” Ava muttered and lifted her hand, tucking the mess of hair behind her ears.

“Who the fuck is that?” Judas cast Nero a glare as the man turned, strode across the foyer, and yanked open the broken doors.

“What the—” Bond muttered, cutting me a look of confusion.

But the stranger was gone, along with the mist.

“I thought you said it was a damn binding spell?” Bond growled.

Nero just looked at his hands. “I thought so too.”

“Whatever that was, you brought it into existence.” Ava stepped toward the foyer. “Maybe it’s fine now. Maybe that’s all it wanted?”

I turned to Nero. The small shake of his head mirrored mine. “I don’t think so. Not on a night like tonight.”

“It’s not Halloween...not yet, right?” Ava looked to Chuck.

A creature of the deep sea didn’t feel the pull of the moon as much as a Vampire. It was instinct for us, like the pull for blood, and darkness. It was just there.

“It’s midnight,” Chuck answered. “So technically Halloween.”

“Shit,” she answered, and chewed her bottom lip. Her expression turned hopeful. “So, is there any way we can pretend all of this never happened?”

Nero bent and grabbed the locket from the floor. “Maybe it was a one-time thing, but maybe not. You really want to take that chance?”

I looked to the door. Panic already rising. I didn’t like the idea of taking a chance like that at all. Not as a Vampire, and certainly not as an Ancient.

I started for the door, leaving the others to make up their own minds.

“Mor.” Judas raced to meet me at the door. “You want to talk about this?”

I stilled with my hand on the twisted handle. This was the hard part to our relationship. The need to protect each other, and still perform our obligation as the leaders of our lines put a strain on both of us. Just like it was about to do right now. “What do you want to talk about? If that...creature is about to unleash his magic on the city and we had a hand in that, don’t you think we have an obligation to stop it as well?”

“I just, we don’t even know what it is.” Fear crowded his perfect eyes.

My fingers slipped from the handle. “It’s going to be okay. I have my pack, nothing is going to get past the three of you. If the last few hours are anything to go on, it’ll be you I’ll have to watch.”

There was a hint of a smile, just enough to push aside the concern. He leaned close, and brushed his lips across my cheek and murmured, “I told you before. When I’m around, getting the door for you it my highest priority.”

He reached for the handle and opened the broken door for me.
